Service Provider

No matter which type of scale you decide to purchase, you will need a service provide to perform preventative maintenance on your scale equipment, or emergency service incase of unforeseen problems. Your scale service provider should be authorized and factory trained by the manufacture to work on your scale.

When choosing the correct players for your scale team, consider factors such as; experience, professionalism, company background and history, and most important the individuals themselves. When dealing with all of the players you choose, ensure that all responsibilities are clear and you do not encounter any surprises during your scale installation.

Preventive Maintenance

Regardless of what type of scale you decide to purchase, your scale equipment will need preventative maintenance. This scheduled service should include inspection, calibration, any adjustments needed and finally tested to ensure H-44 compliance. Remember that you as the scale owner and user are responsible for scale house keeping, so ensure that your scale is kept clean and free of debris. You should schedule preventative maintenance service for your scale at least 2 times a year for low to normal usage. If you have a high or severe usage scale, then 4 times a year or even monthly would be recommended. Shown in the table below is a list of specific services that should be accomplished during every scheduled maintenance visit.

During each pre-scheduled maintenance visit, your service technician should perform the following services
Consult with scale operator to determine if any known problems exist
Check the condition of the scale
After inspection and adjustment as needed, the scale should be checked and calibrated with known test weights and adjusted to conform to performance requirements and tolerances in accordance to N.I.S.T. Handbook 44
Check indicator and printer for proper operation, print clarity, conformance to Weights and Measures scale codes
Clean indicator and printer
Confirm that all required identification markings for platform and indicator are in place and legible
Seal scale and those components which must be secured from unauthorized adjustments
Furnish a complete written report on the condition and accuracy of the scale. Include notification of any future required repairs
Instruct scale operating and maintenance personnel of proper operation and maintenance procedures
Keep customer advised of new products on the market which fit their application
If applicable, remove manhole covers and check: pit condition; moving parts, wear on suspension; pivots and bearings; steel condition; condition and adjustment of bumper bolts
Check deck clearance and bumpers
Additional services appropriate to your particular scale configuration or application

Modem Service

Some scale companies have the ability to troubleshoot or monitor your scale via modem. This could actually save you time and money because the certified technician could determine what is causing the problem prior to going to fix the scale. Ensuring the technician arrives the first time with the parts to get the scale back in operation.

Emergency Service

When choosing a service provider, you will want to ask the following questions:

What is your response time to an emergency service requirement?
What type of parts does your Technician carry on his truck?
How familiar is the technician with my scale?
How long does it typically take to get a scale back up and running?
Is emergency service available 24/7?

Once your potential service providers answer these questions, have them give you a reference list of current customers. Call these references and ask them if they are satisfied with the service they are provided. Once you get all the information above, you will be able to make an educated decision on who will be your service provider.
